# Protocols

Epiq AI uses protocols to define how documents are searched and reviewed within a Collection. Protocols are configured at the Collection level and determine what search terms or tags are available to reviewers. 

Epiq AI supports two protocol types: search protocols and review protocols.

### Search protocols

A search protocol contains a list of search terms associated with a Collection. These terms help teams identify and isolate relevant documents.

Search protocols can be used to:

* Generate search term reports.
* Create subsets of documents for review based on defined search terms.

#### Supported file formats

You can add a search protocol using one of the following formats:

* Excel (XLSX)
* CSV (CSV)

### Review protocols

A review protocol defines the tags and tagging guidance that reviewers use when coding documents.

When a review protocol is applied:

* Tags from the protocol appear in the tagging panel.
* Tagging instructions are available to reviewers while annotating documents.
* The protocol is viewable directly from the document annotation interface.

This helps ensure consistent tagging and review decisions across reviewers.

* Word (DOCX)
* PDF (PDF)
