# Metadata uploads

Metadata uploads let you add new fields or update existing fields in a Collection. You can upload metadata in two modes:

* **Overlay.** Replaces existing metadata values with the values in the upload. Adds new metadata if it does not already exist.
* **Append.** Adds new metadata values while keeping all existing metadata unchanged.
