# Apply filters to a chat

You can narrow the focus of a prompt by defining the data source, including the relevant collections. You can also filter the data to further refine the data source. Refining the scope of the data helps Ask AI retrieve more precise context and improves the relevance of responses, especially in large document sets.

To apply filters to a chat, complete the following procedure.

1. At the bottom of the Chat page, in the prompt box, select **Filter**.
2. In the **Filter by Collections** dropdown, choose one or more collections to include. By default, all collections are included.
3. In the **Search Filters** section, use the **Select field**, **Operator,** and **Value** dropdowns to define your filter criteria. Available fields are specific to your selected project.
4. Click outside the filter box to save your filters. **Note:** The **Filter** icon turns blue when sources are defined for the chat.
5. Enter your prompt in the prompt box and press **Enter**.

**Result:** A filter label appears below your prompt, indicating that you have filtered the sources for the chat. Select the label to view your applied filters.
